Tottenham Hotspur Ladies player Renee Hector has said she was racially abused by a Sheffield United opponent during a game on Sunday.
Hector wrote on Twitter that the opposition player had directed monkey noises at her during an FA Women’s Championship match.
“Such a shame that racism seems to be rising up again in football,” the 23-year-old wrote. “I received some monkey noises from an opposition player. The only reaction was to let football do the talking.”
In a statement on Twitter, Tottenham Ladies — who said Hector had informed the referee during the match — said they had “reported the alleged incident to the FA and await their response” and would be making no further comment.
Sheffield United Women said they were “aware of PAY ATTENTION ➔ on social media [by Hector] and have already begun an investigation to determine the full facts.”
In a statement, the FA said: “We take all allegations of discrimination very seriously and will be making inquiries into the matter.”
