A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the party is hiding in the bunker of ethnicity to avoid what he described as “their inevitable defeat” adding that “ but that won’t change anything.”
The statement may not be unconnected with recent coming together of several political parties under the Coalition of United Political Parties and moves by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rally the parties to unseat the President
The group have thrown their weight behind the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to unseat President Buhari in 2019 presidential election.
The coming together of the group with strong support coming from former President Obasanjo may have unsettled the power block at the Aso Rock as they also enjoy the backing of some powerful retired Generals in the Nigeria Army who had rallied similar support to enthrone President Buhari in 2015.
The group are hinging their decision to dump their earlier support for the incumbent President following what they see as his dismal failure and inability to fulfill his promises made to Nigerians in 2015.
But Shehu who likened the current scenario to similar efforts to similar efforts in 2015, noted that “ it is an effort to repeat the old experiment that failed is 2015”
“They failed to stop him from coming to power in 2015 and they will fail yet again on February 16th.”
According to him, “If all these groups are ganging up against one person, that is President Buhari, it tells you who is the formidable candidate in the election”
“This gang up they forged, one more time will change nothing. It is for the people to decide.” he said
